WE-The People

Babu Speaks:

This is not a story!! This is about us. We- The People of India. We, the PROUD Indians.
PROUD of being SOCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE, PROUD of being careless towards ourselves.

To those of you who got offended at the accusation, here are the reasons:

  1. We break signals, unless there isn't a policeman on the other side.
  2. We honk carelessly in the traffic, even when there isn't much that the person in front of you can do, in a jam.
  3. We cross our roads and even HIGHWAYS, while SMS-ing friends or talking on cell phones and sometimes just walking nonchalantly, ignoring the fact that there could be a vehicle coming in your direction. It is assumed by default, that a vehicle has to stop for us, whenever we decide to cross the road!!!!!
  4. When a stone/some obstruction is lying on the road, we do not care to pick it up, and throw it in a corner, until someone falls, gets hurt and conveniently blames the government for bad roads!!!!!!!!!

WHY do we have to break a traffic signal, when the maximum that you will be delayed there is 90 seconds. Even if you have to stop at 10 signals on your way, you will be delayed only by 15 mins!!!! WHY is our personal urgency more important than the life of our own and others?? And if we really don't care about lives so much, we must be hypocrites when we do a peace protest, for the LIVES lost in 26/11 and Tsunamis!!!!!!!!!

WHAT is wrong in stopping your vehicle, for a few seconds, to go and clear the road of some obstruction, if it can save someone's life?? Every road is NOT monitored by a close-circuit camera, and we have to take up this responsibility if we CARE!!

WE can blame the government for bad condition of the roads, the quality of cement or brick used in building the road dividers, but what are WE contributing in bringing about a change? WE call ourselves literate people. ARE WE?????!!!!

Being literate does not mean possessing a degree in Engineering/ Commerce /Arts or anything. It also means being AWARE of the RESPONSIBILITY towards the SOCIETY that is AWARDED to us with that degree. Drinking and Driving after late night parties, portrays in BOLD, our irresponsibility and Until, we realize this, WE are all ILLITERATES!!!!

WE need not be heroes, by doing an act of Valour or courage only. We, can just feel PROUD by doing our least bit in obeying traffic rules. Feel PROUD that you are a RESPONSIBLE CITIZEN of INDIA, when you STOP at a SIGNAL, when our fellow ILLITERATE CITIZENS, do everything they can to LOSE their own lives or take others lives, by jumping that signal!!! Movies like "Rang De Basanti" and "Anniyan (Aparichit)", were not just made for commercial successes. They wanted us to to be RESPONSIBLE in our deeds!!.

It is from Us that the next generation learns. You are the HEROES(or HEROINES) for the next generation. A Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan only as much as influences the hair-do's of the next generation. YOU and only you can influence their habits by doing the RIGHT things!!!!

To those of you, who have reached this far, it is my request, to START to make the INDIAN ROADS, a SAFER PLACE, for everyone. Think before jumping a signal, if indeed, it will cost you a fortune, if you reach a few minutes late!!.

In case you still feel offended..... WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi naresh,
What you say absolutely right! At the heart of every Indian there is still blood to cheat one another and shirk from responsibility. People may feel we are just complaint box. But looking at the attitude of every Indian, there seems a dark future for the nation. Our pride of our culture would swallow in our progress and curb further development.

niceee post naresh.... :) .... and you are right if we dont take care of small things we would not be able to take care of the big issues that surrounds us...

One thing i have observed when i came to states is that the people here respect the law and the system......

Nice one. It is basically self discipline for everyone, whether you are crossing the road or driving the vehicle. If everyone is disciplined in public at least there will be more peace and safety on the roads for all. Keep the good work moving......

Actually, questions like these will keep on increasing. Change will come in the society PRECISELY because more and more people are asking such questions. Unfortunately, where we fail to bring the change is in our own community. When we see one of our close friends or relatives doing something wrong, we laugh it off as an isolated incident as we do not wish to gain the reputation of being "the professor".

And then again, we have double standards when it comes to us.

I think the Indian society, at least as of now, works well when there is a danda involved. Strict law enforcement, better police salaries is likely to improve the situation!
